Fiumefreddo di Sicilia is a small town in the Province of Catania, set on the Ionian coast at the north-eastern foothills of Etna. Its position between the volcano and the sea gives it a varied setting of greenery, wooded vegetation and coastal landscape, while its character remains closely tied to local parish life and neighbourhood traditions.
The town’s identity reaches back to a feudal nucleus once known as Castel Fiumefreddo, or in Latin *Castrum Fluminis Frigidi*. Its territory was once part of the large Calatabiano estate before becoming an independent fief in 1296. In 1592, Don Giovanni Pietro Cottone sold the fief to the Gravina family, whose long presence shaped its aristocratic background until the early nineteenth century, when it became a municipality.
The addition of “di Sicilia” later distinguished it from Fiumefreddo Bruzio in the province of Cosenza. Today, Fiumefreddo di Sicilia stands out for the way its Etna-side greenery, Ionian setting and feudal Gravina memory come together in a compact coastal town.
