Motta Sant’Anastasia is a small medieval town in the province of Catania, set in the Simeto valley at the foot of Mount Etna. Its identity is inseparable from its setting: the old settlement rises on a high volcanic neck known locally as La Rocca, a naturally defensive outcrop that gives the town its compact, hilltop character.
Its name reflects layered origins, combining the pre-Roman word “Motta” with the Greek-Byzantine “Anastasia”. The site has ancient Greek roots dating to the 4th–5th century BC, later saw Roman presence, and became especially important in the Norman period, when its position was strengthened as a lookout and stronghold linked to the defence of Catania and the entrance to the plain.
Today, Motta Sant’Anastasia retains the feel of a historic borgo shaped by geology as much as by history. Its medieval character, Etna-side landscape and long memory of defensive importance make it distinctive among the towns of eastern Sicily.
