San Cipirello is a small inland town in the Palermo hinterland, set in a hilly landscape at the foot of Monte Iato, about 394 metres above sea level. Its character is local and rural, shaped by the surrounding countryside and by an agricultural and artisanal tradition that still defines much of its identity.
Unlike many older Sicilian hill towns, San Cipirello is a modern settlement with a precise 19th-century origin. It was created in 1838 after a landslide destroyed much of nearby San Giuseppe Jato, leading many families to move south to the area then known as contrada Sancipirrello. The town became an autonomous municipality in 1864, while its name may derive from a landowner called Sancio Pirrello.
Its setting links it to a much deeper past: the territory around Monte Iato preserves evidence of ancient settlement through Sican-Punic, Roman and Arab phases. This contrast between a planned 19th-century town, with an ordered square-plan layout, and a landscape marked by far older histories gives San Cipirello its distinctive place in inland western Sicily.
